Contender Movie Review
Character and Integrity do not exist only when we can see them. People may appear to have character and not just as people may have character and appear not to.
This is an excellent little movie with good acting and a good story but the story and the point of the movie are the most memorable.
The vice president has died in office and must be replaced. The nomination process is the vehicle for delivery of this political and moral message. Joan Allen is excellent in the role of Senator Laine Hanson who is nominated by the President, Jeff Bridges, to be the new Vice President of the United States.
Political forces mount on both sides and the confirmation process turns into a circus with outrageous conduct on the part of the confirmation committee in pursuing allegations of sexual impropriety on the part of Laine. Her refusal to answer those allegations proves to be a difficult position and appears to give her enemies the upper hand. Her integrity and the integrity of the President in maintaining that position show the virtue of moral positions over both politics and suspicion.
When we learn that the allegations are baseless and Laine still refuses to answer the allegations we understand that it is her deeply held belief that prevails. If you are not entitled to ask the question then you are not entitled to an answer no matter what that answer is.
Not an action movie and very much a political statement as well as a moral statement this was still an interesting movie. It overcame the difficulty of moving the story forward without a lot of dramatic action and was still a memorable story at the end.
