This movie can be enjoyed by the war movie fan who enjoys the action of WWII era war movies or by anti war movie fans who seek out deeper message movies about the futility of war and going beyond killing your enemies.

The story is that 4 American soldiers are trying to return to the Allied lines after surviving the Malmedy Massacre when they rescue a downed British pilot who has information about the battle lines that may help save a lot of lives if he can get the information to the Allied command. He was one of the last planes to fly over the German lines before weather shut down all flights and covered the German troop movements.

The subplot within the group revolves around Deacon, played by a Corbin Allred. Deacon is a former religious missionary who spent time in Germany and speaks German but is also a very good soldier. He is a good soldier suffering from battle fatigue as a result of accidentally killing some civilians. He is unable to sleep and begins to hallucinate but he is still a good soldier and excellent marksman. When he fails to kill a german soldier who is escaping from them he is accused by the Medic, played by Alexander Polinsky, of intentionally missing. Their conflict results in an intermittent conversation on death and faith. Both recount the same experience of watching wounded soldiers die but the missionary finds his faith reinforced and the medic loses his faith all together.

With several brisk fire fights there is a lot of action and we root for the Americans to win and make it back to their lines. With all the discussion of faith and the actions of Deacon in killing german soldiers, accidentally killing civilians ,and releasing a german prisoner, we are given enough to thoughtfully address the issue of the soldiers' faith and how it impacts the soldiers' actions.

A predictable but still moving ending makes this a memorable movie. No big name stars and good solid acting by the cast makes this a movie about common and nameless soldiers rather than a movie about movie stars playing soldier.
