Gone with the Wind Movie Review
1939 was the year of good movies. They include The Wizard of Oz, Goodbye Mister Chips, Stage Coach... And though all excellent, the grand daddy of them all is, and always will be Gone With The Wind. Based on Margaret Mitchell's book, it is the epic story of the south before, during and following the civil war in Atlanta, Georgia. The main character in the story is Scarlet O'Hara(Vivian Leigh) whose comfortable life is shattered by the devastation of the war and how her life is changed by this devastation. Before the war breaks out, Scarlet has no concerns other than trying to win the heart of Ashley Wilkes(who's engaged and soon married to Melanie Wilkes- Olivia de Havilland) The war soon sends Ashley off to war, separates her from her family and destroys her beloved home-Tara. The movie depicts the horrors of the war and the resolution Scarlet makes to make better for herself as soon as the war is over and she is able. Scarlet never stops loving Ashley but finds herself swept off her feet by Rhett Butler(Clark Gable- a wealthy man from Charleston). Rhett really loves Scarlett and though she married Rhett and had married others too, her heart is always for Ashley. There's too much in the book or movie to condense it for this review but the movie was a classic. It has love/romance, wonderful costuming, photography and a suspenseful plot. The movie is long and takes time to see but it's well worth getting an accurate picture of life around the 1860's Margaret Mitchell only wrote one book- it's a shame because I can't help wondering what her others would be like.
