Ten Great Horror Movies You (Probably) Haven't Seen

Oct. 31, 2008 by michael

Happy Halloween everyone!

I know. It's just another Halloween. It comes every year. You probably have your rituals, like with every holiday, that you do every year. Same family, same movies.

This year, why not pick out a new flick to watch as the spooks are making their rounds. Here is a list of a few movies you may not have seen that are sure to add something new to your Halloween.

Nosferateau

This one's already been mentioned in the classics list, but most people still probably haven't seen this one. One of the earliest vampire movies, and truly cinematic. This has inspired many films that came since, and has affected our legends of vampires to this day. The vampire's weakness to sunlight came from this film.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

This is another film from the silent era. The cinematic elements and stylistic set pieces make this whole film slightly offsetting and dreamlike. One of the original 'twist' endings in film, it'll probably surprise people even today.

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse

Dr. Mabuse

A young police officer trying to track down the source of recent crimes is led to an insane asylum, where near-catatonic inmate Dr. Mabuse spends all his time writing detailed plans for his ingenius crimes. This is a german film by Fritz Lang of Metropolis fame, so just fair warning that people don't speak English.

Evil Dead 2

Evil Dead

Everyone's seen Army of Darkness (at least it seems that way), but it seems not as many movie watchers have seen the other two movies in the Evil Dead series. Take the next step in working your way backwards in this cult classic trilogy and pick up the Evil Dead 2 to see some more great scenes of Bruce Campbell fighting with himself.

Lord of Illusions

This underrated film uniquely mixes horror/sci-fi with a noir feel. The blurring of illusion and reality along with the film noir atmosphere makes this one a good late night flick. The genre confusion probably kept a lot fo movie-going audiences away, but it's worth adding to your list.

Creepshow

This movie was actually an anthology of different horror stories, something of an homage to pulp horror comics, and includes stories by Stephen King. It spawned a couple of sequels as well as the tv series Tales from the Darkside.

Bubba Ho-Tep

All that needs to be said about this movie is that it stars Bruce Campbell as Elvis, now living in a nursing home in anonymity, who must fight a mummy named Bubba Ho-Tep along with some friends from the nursing home. What more do you need to know?

Frighteners

This film stars Michael J Foxx as a psychic who uses his otherworldly connections to con people, when he finds himself in the middle of a supernatural murder mystery, and must confront and stop the mysterious reaper from killing his intended victims. The film mixes humor and horror elements, lending it a somewhat confusing identity for critics as well as box office audiences. Definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it.

Seventh Seal

Regarded as a cinematic masterpiece, this is definitely one of the more cerebral horror movies you will probably see. Ingmar Bergman's film about a man playing chess with Death, in the midst of plague-ravaged europe, brings up deep questions about death and life. This film is in Swedish with subtitles, but don't let that stop you.

Ringu

The original Japanese version of the Ring, this movie is considered to be Japan's scariest horror movie of all time. If you liked the Ring even a little bit, go to your video store and pick up the original.

This is a good list. I'd also suggest all of the Universal Classics as most people probably haven't seen those.
